The paintings in this series are produced by making meditations on the chakras. This mandala celebrates the Root Chakra or Muladhara (sanskrit)–the foundation of our energetic chakra system, and the starting point for spiritual development. Literally meaning “root” or “foundation”, the artwork invites us to contemplate our security and basic needs, how they are being met…or not.
The organic patterns are made with my overlapping handwriting, in this one using the words safe, grounded, supported, success, and stability. I fill in shapes arising from the tangle of language, with watercolor and gouache. The process is automatic, yet thoughtful, and therefor meditative. While working, I often find peace and unity at the deep level of our collective consciousness, beyond words. Daily struggles or arguments seem to evaporate, and problems solve themselves.
This phenomenon is known as Flow State, and happens in meditative art making of all kinds, especially mandala making. I hope this painted chakra series will remind others of peace and unity, and help bring that awareness into daily life. You can read more about my process and Flow State in my portfolio.
